Everyone in RMR is invited to join the Ranchettes. We have lots of new neighbors, so please reach out and invite them to our get together.(Sometimes we even invite the Ranch hands!)

Thank you so much Ellen Edwards for hosting our first Ranchettes get together of the season. Having Jane Little Botkin, the author of The Pink Dress: A Memoir of a Reluctant Beauty Queen.made our party extra special!

Our October meeting will be at Kathleen Tanzman’s home on Thursday October 16th from 5-7.  The evite has gone out . Thank you Kathleen.

Donna Fox has agreed to host our November meeting. It is tentatively planned for a brunch on November 2nd.

We still need someone to host our Christmas get together.

Wimberley History, Trivia, Fun Facts

Who was Susan Danforth?

According to Bill and MF Johnson in their book, Wimberley It’s Deep in the Heart of Texas, Susan Brooks Danforth was born in Wimberley on May 9^th, 1876 and lived here for over 100 years. She was a teacher and later a principal. In 1942 she brought indoor restrooms to the school by digging a septic tank hole with help from Carl Scudder and 2 others. (Do the names Danforth Elementary and Scudder Elementary ring a bell?) Susan was also a telephone operator, drove the school bus, wrote a book, painted in oils, and worked in carpentry.

Answers:

1. 2 crops milled and ginned- cotton and corn
2. What happened to the mill?- It was razed in 1924 after shutting down when the road to San Marcos was improved and a competitive mill was built in New Braunfels.
3. Animals- angora and Spanish goats
4. In 1938,the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) loaned PEC $1,322,000 to build electric lines in the hill country. The loan was made after Lyndon Johnson had a conversation with Pres. Roosevelt. It cost $5 for the initial hook up and then $2.45 a month, but most farmers and ranchers thought it was too expensive. (The rate was higher than the average rates across the nation due to the amount of the loan.) In 1939 electricity came to the hill country and the rate was eventually lowered when the LCRA took over the operation of PEC. Some residents had to wait a year or longer after paying the initial fee before the lines reached them.
5. Oldest church- Wimberley Christian Church. In Wimberley since 1925 after being moved from Hays City on the back of a pick uo.

Cattle news

News from Len- Kevin Fowler is talking about replacing some fence between his place and our neighborhood. He just put up a windmill and a stock tank. He wants to bring in some longhorns.

If a longhorn bull is chasing you, what steps should you take? – The longest ones you could.

Kevin also wants to restack some of the old rock wall fence that’s there.

Have You Heard?

There is a new boot at Saint Stephens and one being painted for the golf course. 

The mural on the water tank at the Welcome Center is being painted.

Wimberleyarts.org mixer is now on the 3rd Wednesday of each month

Wimberley ISD proud to announce that on Friday, October 11th at the varsity Texan Football game against Salado HS, there will be an opportunity to learn more and contribute to Logan’s Dugout.

Logan’s Dugout is housed at Barnabas Connection here in Wimberley and was created in memory of Logan Overall to share his love of helping others by supporting Wimberley’s youth with equipment assistance. They accept donations of new and gently used sports equipment and redistribute them to students in Wimberley who may not be able to participate in extracurricular activities otherwise. Last year approximately 150 families benefited from equipment provided through Logan’s Dugout.  Monetary donations are used to purchase needed items that are not in their inventory.

At the Texan Football game on Oct. 11 Logan’s Dugout will have an information table where you can learn more and make monetary donations. 

If you have new or gently used equipment that you would like to donate, please visit their website for drop off times at their office.
